PORTALS
Portals are technology art sculptures that connect to a network of identical installations all over the planet. Each Portal is located in public spaces, providing a real-time livestream 24/7 that frequently rotates between different Portal locations on Earth.
The vision behind the project, led by Benediktas Gylys, is to transcend physical and cultural boundaries by creating gateways that foster empathy and connection in an increasingly divided world.
To make these sculptures globally deployable, Helldorfer Engineering, in collaboration with Nicholas Perillo (Augmentl Studio), completely re-engineered the original 10-ton monolith. The result is a 3.2-ton modular steel and concrete structure that fits into a shipping container and can be assembled within days - while maintaining the iconic, otherworldly presence of the original design.
The structure must withstand high wind loads and meet international safety standards, all while housing sensitive electronic and optical components. This required a close integration of artistic intent with advanced engineering solutions.
The project went viral, generating over a billion impressions and becoming a powerful symbol of connection in divided times.
Tasks by Helldorfer Engineering:
• Structural redesign into a modular frame (in collaboration with Nicholas Perillo)
• Creation of detailed production drawings
• Organization of certification processes, including wind load analysis
• Material sourcing and fabrication support
• On-site assembly assistance
Currently, 4–5 Portals are manufactured annually in Berlin and shipped worldwide to various locations, continuing to expand this unique global network.
